Gameplay Trailer with Music done by me with Magix Music Maker.
We all know how the nightmare ends.
Here is how it starts...
Concept
Parasite Paradise is a 2D free scrolling game for PC with elements of riddles, dexterity and fighting.
You play a parasite which is infecting a body and has to fight through eight different levels.
Parasite Paradise was our first semester project.
I was the imageneer and vision keeper of the game, I also did the project- and teammanagment as team-leader.
We wanted to create a game that is a bit different...
In Parasite Paradise there are four types of enemies, but only one of them can kill you instantly. The other three just affect your movement; they slow you down, blind you or explode and push you away.
The most dangerous elements for the parasite are the walls. Its biology is not compatible with that of the body, so every time it hits a wall, it loses life. And that makes blinding and all the other actions the enemies do dangerous.
Ideas and Leveldesign
We wanted to do everything in the game by ourselves, so each level is hand-painted by our freaking fantastic artists. The music and FX-sounds were done by me. (See here)
Because the walls drain life, the was important for the game design. The narrower the ways, the more dexerty is necessasary.
That's why I created a 2D blackboxing. We Game Designers were painting the environment in the exact dimensions and scaled out every path as small as we wanted the game to be hard.
Than we placed the collisions and tested the game black-boxed.
When everything was as we wanted it, we gave the blackbox design to the artist and they just had to draw the environment over the black areas .

Enemies
Macrophages: They are the big, bad enemies. They are the only enemy who can kill you instantly. Once you come too close to a macrophage, it chases you and tries to eat you.
They are so massive that you can't kill them, so the only way is to flee. |
Monozyts: Monozyts grab you and slow you down. A bad thing if you are chased by a macrophage. But you can kill them. So be fast enough and don't let them grab you.
|
Helpercells: Be aware, they are help for the body, not for you. They try to analyze you, but as they know no parasites like you, they explode and the blast wave pushes you away. If you are too close to a wall this can be deadly.
|
Plasmacells: They shoot Plasma at you, that will limit your sight for a while. And without seeing it's hard to navigate.
|
There are some more elements: bloodstreams and venous-valves that block your way, a continuous bloodstream which gives an organic feeling while playing and some more things to explore.
Note
It was our first game, and I am very proud of it. I think, for the small amount of time we had creating it, we've done a great job.
Parasite Paradise has risen from an idea to a full game with intro, (small story), eight levels and an outro with self-made music and sounds and an easter egg – and all in less then thirty days of creation!
And, last but not least, we submitted the game to the Deutscher Computerspielpreis 2012. We didn't win a price, but we were there.
Interface
We decided to have a very simple UI inside of the game. You can see the lifepoints as lifelights on the back of the parasite. In the right bottom corner there is the time and the number of collectibles. Both give extra points if you finish the level.

The Menu Interface shows the progress inside the body. The body-parts are highlighted. Inside the level you can find structures of the part you are in right now.
